How Does the OVO-20 Chick Heating Plate Work?

The heating plate warms up to the selected temperature, which can be adjusted using the built-in thermostat control. It emits contact heat, allowing chicks to gather underneath just as they would beneath a brooding hen. This encourages natural behaviour, reduces stress and promotes healthy growth. The OVO-20 provides enough space to comfortably accommodate approximately 15–20 chicks at the same time.

Artificial Brooder Plate or Heat Lamp – Which Is Better?

Artificial brooder heating plates are highly valued for their outstanding energy efficiency. Traditional heat lamps typically consume between 100 and 250 W, whereas the OVO-20 uses only 15–22 W, reducing electricity consumption by almost ten times. Ideal Brooding Temperature – Built-in Temperature Control

The required brooding temperature depends on the chicks' age. During the first few days of life, it should be maintained at approximately 32–33°C (90–91°F) and then gradually reduced by 1–2°C each week until reaching around 18–20°C (64–68°F). The OVO-20 Heating Plate features an integrated thermostat adjustment knob—simply turn it clockwise to increase the temperature.

The easiest way to check whether the temperature is correct is by observing the chicks' behaviour. If the chicks are active, eating and evenly spread around the brooder, the temperature is ideal.

Too cold: chicks huddle tightly together beneath the plate and chirp loudly.
Too hot: chicks pant, avoid the heating plate and appear lethargic.

Adjustable Height and Tilt for Different Poultry Species

Before introducing chicks, it is recommended to switch on the heating plate 24–48 hours in advance to verify proper operation. Adjust the height so the chicks can comfortably walk underneath while still feeling the warmth on their backs. The adjustable height makes the OVO-20 suitable for raising chickens, ducks, geese, quail, pheasants and even small animals such as kittens or puppies.

In addition to height adjustment, the heating plate can also be tilted, allowing smaller or weaker chicks to access warmer areas more easily. Changing the angle also creates different temperature zones beneath the plate, enabling chicks to choose the temperature that suits them best. Using the measurement markings on the legs, the plate can be positioned up to approximately 16 cm above the floor.
